Expert summary

Rolls-Royce Limited was founded in 1906 by Henry Royce and C S Rolls. They produced their first aircraft engine in 1914. Rolls-Royce Motors was created from the demerger of the Rolls-Royce car business from Rolls-Royce Limited in 1973. That happened as a result of the attempt to privatize the Rolls-Royce Company. Rolls-Royce Motors was acquired in 1980 by Vickers. When they decided to sell the company in 1998, both BMW and Volkswagen placed bids. As per the settlement, only BMW was permitted to use the name ‘Rolls-Royce’ from January 1, 2003. Volkswagen could market cars only in the name of ‘Bentley.’ And Rolls-Royce Convertible called the Corniche stopped production in 2002.

2009 Rolls Royce Phantom Coupe @ Geneva Auto SHow
What price top-shelf automotive indulgence? If the new Rolls-Royce Phantom Coupe is any guide, bank on a cool $400,000. This is the breathtaking price tag being attached to this plush two-door in the run up to its world premiere at the Geneva auto show early next month. To put it in perspective, that's more than double what Mercedes-Benz asks for its top-of-the-line coupe, the $197,500 CL65 AMG. Yikes!

Rolls Royce & Bentley: Spirit of Excellence
Rolls Royce is the epitome of class, when you say something is the Rolls Royce of whatever, people understand instinctively that you are refering to the benchmark. This book has crisp images and the text is very interesting and refreshingly easy to read. It chonicles from start to finish the first rolls to the most current, and the reader seeing the evolution of the car, ever changing, but somehow always staying true to what makes a Rolls Royce the finest automobile in the world, that was the brilliance of the designers and creators of Rolls at Crewe. Highly recommended.

is a fascinating and informative history of the first forty years of the internationally famous Rolls-Royce company, whose achievements were part and parcel of the technological advancements of the twentieth century. It was in 1904 that Henry Royce and Charles Rolls collaborate to build luxury cars for the rich. Then successfully engineered the "Silver Ghost" and launched one of the most successful car manufacturers of their day. The impact of both World Wars compelled the corporation to the cutting edge of aeronautical engines for such legendary aircraft as the Spitfire, Hurricane, and American Mustang.
